Salesforce Data Cloud Consultant: how to prepare

Data streams, the data model, identity resolution, segments and activation: how the pieces of Data Cloud fit, and how to study them for the Consultant exam.

The Data Cloud Consultant exam rewards people who can follow a customer record from the moment it arrives to the moment it is used. Learn the features one by one and the exam feels like a list of names; learn the flow of data and most questions answer themselves. Salesforce now also calls the product Data 360, so you will see both names.

Follow the path a record takes

  1. Data streams bring data in from Salesforce clouds, cloud storage and other sources.
  2. Data lake objects hold that data in its raw shape.
  3. Mapping turns it into data model objects on a standard model, so data from different sources means the same thing.
  4. Identity resolution uses match and reconciliation rules to merge records about the same person into unified profiles.
  5. Calculated insights and segments work on that unified data.
  6. Activation sends segments to the places they are used, such as marketing and advertising platforms.

When you read a question, first work out which step it is about. It narrows the answers quickly.

Where people lose marks

  • Mapping mistakes. Knowing which data model object a field belongs to, and why the mapping layer exists at all.
  • Identity resolution. The difference between match rules, which decide who is the same person, and reconciliation rules, which decide which value wins.
  • Governance. Data spaces, permissions and consent.
  • Use cases. Choosing the right feature for a business scenario rather than the most technical one.

Get hands-on

This exam is much easier after building something. Ingest a small data set, map it, run identity resolution and build a segment. Seeing an empty segment and working out why teaches more than any page of notes.
